About Anthony

Paris, June 2012
Born and raised among the rolling hills and suburban sprawl of western Pennsylvania, my interested was sparked early in life to see and experience all that our beautiful planet offers.

Souqs and Spice documents my experiences preparing for and serving in the U.S. Peace Corps in Morocco from January 2014 - April 2016. *Please note that everything on this blog is my personal opinion and does represent the views of the U.S. Peace Corps or the U.S. government!*

Why I joined the Peace Corps:

Traveling around the world has given me a deep appreciation for being born and raised in the United States. Since I first heard about the Peace Corps probably in middle school, I knew that it was the way in which I would someday give back to my country and share my passions and skills with people of a background and culture very different from my own. I realized after a few years of sitting in an office that I needed to get out into the world and work to directly impact people's lives.

Why I'm vegan:

Veganism is a means to an end - an ultimate expression of compassion for life and living beings. By choosing to not contribute directly to the suffering and killing of billions of helpless creatures, I strive to express the innate compassion for a just planet that we all hold inside of ourselves. Our world is full of enough injustices that are completely out of my control, but by drawing a line in the sand and definitively stating what I will and will not put into my body, I will directly be able to reduce pain and suffering felt by thousands of sentient beings during the course of my lifetime.

Despite common misconceptions, humans have no requirement to consume animal flesh or secretions and thrive on a plant based, whole food diet. I hope this blog can document that compassion knows no borders, and plants can sustain us in powerful and delicious ways.
